Australia Day Weekend Fun!

Happy Australia Day (for tomorrow)!  I love that my weekend is not yet over!  Here is what we've been up to so far.

Friday ...

Friday was a beautiful day, which, for us, means a bbq for dinner!  Gareth grabbed a beer, and I threw together some salads to go with.  We had marinated pork chops, lamb chops, and chorizo sausages.

I just had a couple of sausages, with a big plate of salad and corn.

I hadn't been feeling 100% for a couple of days, so I was happy for an early night.

Saturday ...

I wasn't sure what kind of exercise I was up for, but on Saturday morning I headed to the gym.  I did a shorter but harder session - I did a rolling hills program on a low level for an hour, and ended up running 10 km.  Then I did a quick plyometrics circuit - 10 minutes in total.  I was pretty sore after that!

I headed home and had some baked beans on toast.  Nothing fancy, but hit the spot!

We wanted to take advantage of the perfect weather, so we headed down the coast to Barwon Heads, a town on the Bellarine Peninsula.  It was really busy, probably because of all the families headed down there for the last weekend before the school holidays finish.  We saw a local market underway.

After our drive we were pretty hungry so we headed to the first cafe that we liked the look of, Barwon Orange.

It was a cute little cafe, with a bit of a mixed menu - breakfast, pizzas, Indian, etc.  I started with a coffee.

And then decided on an egg, spinach, tomato, feta and avocado roti wrap.  It was really yummy!

After filling our bellies, we headed down to walk along the beach.  It was really  lovely.  There were lots of people around, but it didn't feel crowded.

We headed over the boardwalk to the Ocean Grove side, and checked out the beach there.  Still beautiful, and a bit more quiet.

Our walk brought back our appetites, specifically, a need for ice cream.  We stopped at the Scandinavian Ice Cream Co, and I got caramel mud cake ice cream in a chocolate coated waffle cone.  Great ice cream!

That was enough sun for us, so we headed home.  We were feeling a bit lazy after our active day, which meant takeaway food for dinner.  Specifically, Thai from Fresh Chilli.  We got quite the spread!

I tried a bit of everything: Pad Thai, rice, red vegetable curry, beef, broccoli and a mild curry paste, with a golden parcel, and prawn crackers to share.

We watched Hangover Part III, because Gareth's mum hadn't seen it before.  It was good for an easy laugh.  And then an early-ish night.

Sunday ...

I slept in Sunday!  I was a bit disappointed when I woke up and it was 9am - I don't like wasting my weekend days that way.  I still headed to the gym for a semi-long run - 15km in 90 minutes, and watched the tennis coverage.  I felt ok, but my glutes and hamstrings are pretty tight from the plymetrics the day before.

I was pretty conscious of refuelling properly afterwards, so I had a big bowl of porridge - oats, oat bran, quinoa flakes, linseed, chia seeds, currants, walnuts and cinnamon.  Milk on top.  It was huge! With a Nespresso coffee on the side.  Oh, and a couple of glasses of Powerade Zero.

After cleaning up, I had a light lunch of salad, with mixed lettuce, onion, celery, tomato, pine nuts, chickpeas, and beetroot, with a couple of left over small lamb chops on the side.  Yum!  And not too heavy.

Then we headed to the movies, but had an hour to kill before the movie started, so I got a skinny cappucino to sip on.

We got our obligatory frozen yoghurt (coconut, and salted caramel pecan with various toppings), to take in to see Birdman.

The three of us had some mixed reviews, and although it may not be for everyone, I really enjoyed it. It was a unique movie - the story, the way it was filmed, and the acting were all fantastic.  I highly recommend it!

We decided to have an early dinner whilst we were out, and we went to the Pancake Parlour, which I haven't been to for years.  After a round of drinks, I had a Mediterranean pancake - potato and cheese pancake with olives, sundried tomatoes, fetta, and a big side salad.  It was kind of like a pizza pancake!  I didn't eat it all, but I enjoyed it.

Tonight is all about being quiet, and I might just watch some of the Australian Open.  I was sure either Tomic or Kyrgios would win, but it looks like the Aussies are all out.  Oh well.

Good night!

When was the last time you went to the beach?  Which one?  Are you a beach person, or not?

  1. That ice cream looks AHMAZING!

The last time I went to the beach was on my honeymoon in Cancun! I'm normally more of a mountain person though
